What are punctal plugs?

Punctal plugs, also known as lacrimal plugs or tear duct plugs, are small devices used to treat dry eye syndrome by blocking or partially occluding the tear drainage ducts in the eyes. These plugs are typically made of silicone or collagen materials and come in different sizes and shapes. The purpose of punctal plugs is to slow down or prevent the drainage of tears from the eyes, thereby increasing the moisture on the ocular surface and relieving the symptoms of dry eyes.

Am I a candidate?

Punctal plugs are a suitable option for individuals who experience chronic dry eye symptoms or insufficient tear production. Candidates typically have a diagnosis of dry eye syndrome, which may result from various factors such as aging, hormonal changes, certain medications, environmental conditions, or underlying health conditions. They may experience symptoms such as eye redness, irritation, itching, burning, and a gritty sensation.

What can I expect during the punctal plugs procedure?

During the procedure, you can expect a quick and relatively painless experience. The procedure can be performed at our practice in Orlando. Before the insertion, the eye is numbed with local anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the process. Dr. Warner will then carefully insert tiny plugs into the tear duct openings, which are located at the inner corner of the eyelids. These plugs are designed to slow down the drainage of tears, increasing their retention on the eye surface and alleviating dryness. The insertion of punctal plugs is typically well-tolerated and does not require any incisions or sutures. Patients may experience a mild sensation during the procedure, such as a slight pressure or temporary tearing.

What can I expect after treatments?

After the plugs are inserted, you can immediately resume their normal activities without any significant downtime. Punctal plugs offer a convenient and effective solution for managing dry eye symptoms, providing long-lasting relief and improved tear film stability. Regular follow-up appointments with Dr. Warner will ensure that the plugs are functioning correctly and can be adjusted or replaced if needed.
